Tooth Sealing

Dental sealants for children: Effective protection against caries

The sealing of the chewing surfaces is recommended for children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 18. The occlusal surfaces of the posterior teeth are sealed, sometimes also pits in the front teeth. These are areas that are so anatomically unfavorably shaped that they cannot be completely cleaned of bacterial plaque even with the best oral hygiene at home, meaning that caries is particularly common here.

Studies have shown that tooth sealants, also known as fissure sealants, can prevent the disease of the chewing surfaces with great success (90%) over a period of 12 years. It should be checked at regular intervals whether the sealant layer is still completely intact or needs to be resealed.

Modern caries diagnostics and new procedures such as caries infiltration

Caries infiltration of the interdental spaces is new - initial clinical studies and our own experience are promising. The treatment is painless and harmless and is much better tolerated by children than drilling.

It is important that particularly thorough caries diagnostics are carried out before sealing (magnifying glass check, laser diagnostics, LED cold light diagnostics, staining of caries bacteria) and that the treatment is thorough. We not only remove the bacterial film with ultrasound and brushes, but also blast the tooth surfaces. We also use dentin adhesives to bond the sealants.

What is dental sealant?

FAQs on dental sealants

A dental sealant for children and adolescents protects the deep grooves (fissures) on the chewing surfaces of the molars from caries. These areas are difficult to clean and particularly susceptible to bacterial plaque. The occlusal surface sealant seals these pits with a special plastic so that bacteria and food debris cannot penetrate. Studies show that this can reduce the risk of tooth decay by up to 90 % - an effective contribution to preventing tooth decay in children.
A professional dental sealant usually lasts for several years - often up to 10 or even 12 years. However, it is important to have the sealant checked regularly by your dentist, e.g. as part of your six-monthly check-up. If the sealant layer becomes worn or damaged, it can be easily replaced. This ensures long-term protection against caries.
Statutory health insurance companies cover the costs of dental sealants for children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years - but only for the permanent molars. For additional sealants, for example on smaller teeth or in adults, the costs usually have to be borne privately. Many supplementary dental insurances reimburse these services - it is worth asking in advance.
