Parodoantal treatment in Berlin

Treatment of periodontal disease
The benefits of periodontal treatment lie not only in the preservation of teeth, but also in the promotion of general health, e.g. the significant reduction in the risk of heart attacks, the reduction in the risk of strokes or even the risk of premature births.
Periodontal Treatment Zehlendorf
The successful treatment of periodontal disease (periodontitis, periodontosis) requires that the main parameters of the cause of the disease are examined and treated consistently. In our practice, our specialized dental hygienists ensure that periodontal treatment is carried out and monitored professionally and intervene promptly in the event of relapses. The aim is to preserve and regenerate the fibrous apparatus between the tooth and bone (desmodont). If this is lost, bone, gums and ultimately the teeth follow. This is why conservative and regenerative treatment methods have priority in periodontal therapy. You can expect the following treatment concept:
Diagnostic
Basic cleaning
Gentle deep cleansing (curettage)
Review of the treatment result
Follow-up treatment of still active gum pockets with laser technology
Surgical periodontal treatment
Pocket recall, i.e. regular post-therapeutic cleaning of the tooth surfaces

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is the dental term for the loss of the periodontium due to bacterial inflammation. In the clinical picture, the loss of bone results in a periodontal pocket, which extends from the gum line to the remaining bone and is measured to determine the severity of the disease. Gum pockets can lead to abscesses, the lack of bone support can (but does not have to!) cause the gums to recede visibly, teeth become loose and are lost.

Untreated periodontal pockets lead to a chronic bacterial burden on the body with now proven effects on the vascular structure.

Diagnosis and examination: how periodontitis is objectively assessed

Objective diagnostics using the so-called Florida probe allows the electronic measurement of gum pockets and other important periodontitis characteristics. This allows the anchoring of each tooth in the bone to be fully checked and the inflammation parameters (bleeding during probing) to be recorded. Subsequent follow-up examinations allow an objective assessment of the treatment result.

On this basis, a decision can be made as to whether the treatment was successful, whether further measures are necessary in individual areas and whether there is a good prospect of preserving the teeth.

Therapy options and treatment methods: from antibiotics to surgery

The therapy: consistent, concentrated, uncompromisingly biological.
Successful treatment of periodontitis is based on the knockout principle. Depending on the results of the examination, it is carried out under shielding with an antibiotic tailored to the individual germs. We offer treatment on two consecutive days to shorten the antibiotic intake. We would be happy to inform you about the "full mouth disinfection" concept, in which gum pockets are cleaned and targeted action is taken against harmful bacteria.

After a period of at least two months, the results of the treatment are reviewed and the necessary conclusions are drawn. Individual pockets that are still actively inflamed and the surfaces of implants that are difficult to clean properly by hand are treated with laser light during photodynamic chemotherapy.

Special antiseptics are introduced into the pockets and activated with fine laser probes. This procedure also reaches particularly resistant anaerobic germs that evade other therapies. Surgical intervention is necessary for very deep pockets (> 6 mm). Depending on the morphology of the bone defect, this is carried out with enamel matrix protein alone or with additional support materials (bone substitute, collagen).

FAQs on periodontal treatment

The terms periodontitis and periodontosis are often used interchangeably, but do not mean the same thing in medical terms. Periodontitis refers to an inflammatory disease of the periodontium that is caused by bacterial plaque and can lead to bone loss. Periodontitis used to be a term for the non-inflammatory recession of the gums, but is rarely used today. If you notice bleeding gums, receding gums or loose teeth, you should have yourself checked for periodontitis.
Our modern periodontal treatment begins with a thorough diagnosis, during which the depth of the periodontal pockets and the condition of the periodontium are measured. This is followed by professional cleaning of the periodontal pockets and - depending on the findings - targeted antibacterial therapy, e.g. with antibiotics or laser therapy. The aim is to stop the inflammation, eliminate bacteria and stabilize the periodontium. Treatment is individual and depends on the severity of the periodontitis.

Yes, in many cases periodontitis can be successfully treated without surgery. Non-surgical periodontal therapy - consisting of deep cleaning, antibacterial rinsing and, if necessary, laser treatment - can often effectively contain inflammation. Only in the case of very deep gum pockets or severe bone loss is surgical intervention necessary to rebuild the periodontium. The earlier periodontal treatment begins, the better the chances of success.
Laser treatment for periodontitis is a modern and gentle addition to conventional therapy. The laser has an antibacterial effect and even reaches deep gum pockets that are difficult to access. Photodynamic therapy with laser light can specifically eliminate resistant germs, particularly in the case of chronic periodontitis or the treatment of implants (peri-implantitis). It is painless, supports healing and reduces the need for antibiotics or surgical interventions.
