Tooth Neck Inlays

Causes of tooth neck defects: Why tooth enamel breaks in the neck area

The development of cervical defects has various causes. In our view, one important aspect is that teeth bend under heavy functional stress, which has been confirmed by studies. At the same time, the enamel becomes thinner towards the tooth neck and has an amorphous structure, i.e. it is no longer evenly crystallized.

Under the bending load, these enamel parts fracture and are lost. This exposes the sensitive and soft dentin underneath the enamel. This leads to the development of sensitive tooth necks and wedge-shaped defects above the gum line.

Dental neck inlays as a modern solution: protection without crowning

Tooth neck inlays can cover sensitive tooth necks, permanently close a tooth neck defect and cover dark tooth necks without the tooth having to be crowned.

Our experience shows that the progression of tooth neck defects, which are often incorrectly referred to as "cleaning defects", and the associated gum loss on the visible outer surfaces of the teeth can be halted with dental neck inlays.

Long-term protection for the tooth neck and gums: preserving the structure instead of surgery

The preservation of the so-called "attached gingiva", i.e. the attached gums, ensures that the gums adhere to the tooth neck area and the structure of the bone underneath is preserved. This prevents the development of bone and gum recessions or localized gum pockets without surgical intervention.

FAQs on dental neck inlays

A dental inlay is a custom-made inlay filling that is used for medium tooth defects - particularly in the posterior region or on the neck of the tooth. It is made individually in the laboratory from ceramic or gold and then inserted precisely into the tooth. In contrast to simple fillings, a dental inlay at the dentist offers a significantly higher accuracy of fit, stability and longevity. Dental neck inlays in particular are an elegant solution for sensitive tooth necks and wedge-shaped defects - without the need for a crown.
Compared to traditional fillings, cervical inlays offer better marginal seal quality, longer durability and more natural aesthetics. They effectively cover sensitive tooth necks and prevent further loss of substance - without having to grind down healthy tooth structure unnecessarily. The minimally invasive restoration often makes a crown unnecessary. In addition, dental neck inlays help to preserve the gums and prevent gum recession and bone loss.
The cost of a dental inlay depends on the material (e.g. ceramic or gold), the complexity and the scope of treatment. Statutory health insurance companies usually only cover the fixed allowance for a standard filling - patients pay the rest privately. Supplementary dental insurance often covers the costs of high-quality inlays in full or in part. We will be happy to provide you with a transparent cost plan and advise you individually in our practice.
