What is caries?

Caries is a bacterial disease. It is caused by the metabolism of the bacteria contained in dental plaque. These bacteria convert sugar into acid, which can attack the tooth enamel over a long period of time. The best measures to prevent tooth decay are a low-sugar and low-acid diet, thorough dental care at home and regular prophylaxis at your dentist. If you have plaque and the bacteria it contains removed at an early stage, it has no chance of causing lasting damage to the tooth enamel.

Symptoms and diagnosis: How can you recognize tooth decay?

Caries cannot be recognized solely by the colloquial term “hole in the tooth.” Before it gets to that point, changes can already be seen on the tooth surface. The enamel becomes discolored due to demineralization and initially shows light-colored and later brownish spots. However, not every discoloration (“brown spot”) requires treatment. It may be advisable for the preservation of your teeth to observe a small “blemish” first before picking up the drill, as some lesions do not develop further.
In order to assess the stagnation or possible slow progression of a carious mini-lesion, different classifications of the lesions are documented in a special findings report. We use the latest lasers and LED cold light probes to assess and detect caries lesions early on, prior to any possible caries treatment in Berlin-Zehlendorf. This allows us to objectively distinguish caries from discoloration that does not (yet) require treatment. We are also happy to support your decision for treatment with intraoral photos.

This is how we treat tooth decay in Berlin-Zehlendorf

As a general rule, the earlier caries is detected, the more natural tooth substance can be preserved. This means that restorations can be kept small and limited to the affected area, preserving your natural enamel. We remove only the diseased substance and then treat the tooth with a high-quality aesthetic ceramic filling. Depending on the morphology of the defect, inlays or partial crowns may also be used.
As part of our treatment, we always stain our patients' teeth. Scientific studies show that without staining, caries bacteria can still be detected in 70 percent of treated teeth, hidden invisibly in the dental pulp. Staining makes these bacteria visible before filling, preventing new cavities from forming due to bacteria remaining under the restoration.

FAQs about caries treatment

The first signs of tooth decay are often sensitive teeth, pain when eating sweet or cold foods, and visible discoloration on the teeth. In its early stages, tooth decay is often painless and is only detected during a dental check-up. Regular check-ups are therefore important in order to treat tooth decay at an early stage before more serious damage occurs.
In classic caries treatment, the diseased tooth material is removed, usually by careful drilling. The resulting defect is then filled with a suitable dental filling (e.g., made of plastic, ceramic, or amalgam). In many cases, treatment today is virtually painless and can be performed quickly. In cases of very deep caries, root canal treatment may be necessary to preserve the tooth.
Yes, in certain cases, it is possible to treat tooth decay without drilling—especially in the early stages. Methods such as caries infiltration (e.g., with Icon®) make it possible to seal incipient caries with a special gel and resin before a hole develops. This minimally invasive technique is particularly suitable for superficial initial caries and is completely painless. Early diagnosis by a dentist is a prerequisite.
Thanks to modern technology and gentle procedures, caries treatment is now usually pain-free. Most procedures at our dental practice in Zehlendorf are performed under local anesthesia, so our patients do not feel any pain. In addition, sedation procedures or laser treatments are also available on request for patients who are anxious. Don't hesitate to visit the dentist early on—the smaller the cavity, the easier the treatment.
