Dental treatment under general anesthesia: Safe care provided by experienced anesthesiologists

Under the professional supervision of our anesthesiologist Dr. Thomas Kreutzer, we regularly perform all dental treatments under general anesthesia. As an alternative to general anesthesia, we offer conscious sedation, a twilight sleep under nitrous oxide, which you inhale through a nasal mask in a relaxed state. Thanks to the high percentage of 30% pure oxygen regulated by our equipment, you also receive an “oxygen shower.” You experience the dental treatment through “rose-colored glasses,” and gagging reflexes and pain sensations are also dampened.

Fear of the dentist – twilight sleep at the dentist

General anesthesia may be considered for extensive procedures, failure of conventional anesthetics, dental anxiety, individual needs to be unaware of the dental treatment, or limited willingness to undergo treatment (e.g., due to age or disability).

Our dental consultants will be happy to explain the options available to you in detail so that you can undergo planned treatments without fear or pain.

FAQs about anesthesia treatment

Dental treatment under general anesthesia is particularly useful for patients who suffer from severe dental anxiety, require extensive surgical procedures, or for whom conventional anesthesia methods are insufficient. Anesthesia treatment at the dentist may also be the best solution for children, people with disabilities, or those with limited treatment options. At our practice in Berlin-Zehlendorf, we perform such procedures safely and professionally in close cooperation with an experienced anesthesiologist.
Yes, as an alternative to general anesthesia at the dentist, we offer what is known as conscious sedation (twilight sleep). This involves the patient breathing in a calming mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a nasal mask. This form of dental sedation reduces anxiety, dulls pain, and allows for relaxed treatment—without completely losing consciousness. It is ideal for anxious patients who do not want general anesthesia but still want to be treated in a relaxed manner.
The costs of general anesthesia at the dentist are only covered by statutory health insurance in certain cases—e.g., if medically necessary, for serious treatments, or for children under certain conditions. For purely private reasons, such as fear of the dentist, patients are usually required to pay out of pocket. At our practice, we are happy to advise you individually on the costs and possible reimbursements from your health insurance or supplementary dental insurance.
